  • Middle-class in Ivory Coast see new financial opportunities

After years of headlines about Africa's poverty, the emerging middle class across the continent's economy is now getting attention as a driver of growth, democracy and an expanding pool of consumers for market-hungry retailers. Consumer demand is the engine of Africa's economic and investment surge, and analysts see that middle class and its' rising disposable income as the fuel for that boom. But don't take my word for it, here's a budding Ivorian entrepreneur talking about what it means to be part of the middle class in the West African nation.

More information about the video content bellow: 1. Côte d’Ivoire is the country’s preferred name for itself. The trade in ivory which gave the country its name had almost died out by the 18th century. 2. The Basilica of Our Lady of Peace in The Ivory Coast capital of Yamoussoukro is one of the largest church buildings in the world covering 30000 square metres and accommodating 18,000 people. This is in spite of the fact that about a 40% of the country is Christian. 3. Ivory Coast has two official capitals. Yamoussoukro is the administrative and political capital, and it is also the fourth largest city in the country. However, Abidjan serves as the economic capital and is listed as official capital of the country in most guidebooks. The city has the third largest population of French speaking individuals anywhere in the world. 4. The Fêtes des Masques, (Festival of Masks) held in November in the region of Man is one of Cote d’Ivoire’s biggest and best-known festivals. Competitions between villages are held in order to find the best dancers, and to pay homage to the forest spirits embodied in the intricate masks. 5. Unlike traditional accounts of African countries, the Ivory Coast economy is the most advanced in sub-Saharan Africa, and one of the most developed economies in Africa as a whole. 6. Although there are other properties on the tentative list, Taï National Park, Mount Nimba Strict Nature Reserve, Comoé National Park, and the Historic Town of Grand-Bassam are the four properties that are on the World Heritage List in 2013. The three parks alone are home to thousands of different species of both flora and fauna, many of which are endangered or at risk. 7. Five important states flourished in Ivory Coast during the pre-European era. Compared to neighboring Ghana, Ivory Coast suffered little from the slave trade, as European slaving and merchant ships preferred other areas along the coast with better harbors. By the end of the 1880s, France had established what came through for control over the coastal regions of Ivory Coast, and in 1889 Britain recognized French sovereignty in the area. It gained independence in 1960. Various wide shots of swarms of bats flying in the distance with buildings in the background LEAD IN: If the thought of swarms of bats makes you shudder, perhaps Abidijan is not the best place to visit. Every night at dusk thousands of fruit bats take to the sky. During the day they roost in trees around the city, risking capture by hunters to end up in a bat stew. STORYLINE: As the sun sets, the winged residents of the West African city of Abidjan wake and take to the air. Upto three million Pohle's fruit bats soar into the twilight peppering the sky. From dusk to dawn the bats hunt for food in villages outside Ivory Coast's financial hub. They spend the day hanging upside down in green mango trees that line the boulevards. If you want to see a bat up close try the market, but don't expect them to still be alive. Fruit bats are a popular meat with residents of the Ivory Coast capital. Book seller Aubin Dah says bat meat is delicious. Fans of the delicacy purchase the meat at Gouro market from sellers like Amidi Kichi. Abidjan City, Abidjan City Photos, Abidjan Photos, Abidjan Pictures, Abidjan Images, Abidjan, Ivory Coast, Abidjan City Guide Abidjan is the economic capital of Ivory Coast and the most populous French-speaking city in West Africa. According to the 2014 Ivory Coast census, Abidjan's population was 4.7 million, which is 20 percent of the overall population of the country. Within West Africa, only Lagos, the former capital of Nigeria, surpasses Abidjan in population. Considered the cultural crossroads of West Africa, Abidjan is characterised by a high level of industrialisation and urbanisation. The city expanded quickly after the construction of a new wharf in 1931, followed by its designation as the capital city of the then-French colony in 1933. Abidjan remained the capital of Ivory Coast after its independence from France in 1960. The completion of the Vridi Canal in 1951 enabled Abidjan to become an important sea port. In 1983, the city of Yamoussoukro was designated as the official political capital of Cote d'Ivoire. However, almost all political institutions and foreign embassies continue to be located in Abidjan. Because Abidjan is also the largest city in the country and the centre of its economic activity, it has officially been designated as the "economic capital" of the country. The Abidjan Autonomous District, which encompasses the city and some of its suburbs, is one of the 14 districts of Ivory Coast.
