During the long and stable rule of the Ivory Coast's Godfather Felix Huphouet-Boigny the city of Abidjan has flourished. However, the political instability and the civil war of the past decade have taken their toll on the city. Neglect, low maintenance of buildings and public space and the mass exodus of foreigners have given the city an atmosphere of "lost glory". Very nice is the public zoo. STORYLINE: As the sun sets, the winged residents of the West African city of Abidjan wake and take to the air. Upto three million Pohle's fruit bats soar into the twilight peppering the sky. From dusk to dawn the bats hunt for food in villages outside Ivory Coast's financial hub. They spend the day hanging upside down in green mango trees that line the boulevards. If you want to see a bat up close try the market, but don't expect them to still be alive. Fruit bats are a popular meat with residents of the Ivory Coast capital. Book seller Aubin Dah says bat meat is delicious. Fans of the delicacy purchase the meat at Gouro market from sellers like Amidi Kichi. More information about the video content bellow: 1. Côte d’Ivoire is the country’s preferred name for itself. The trade in ivory which gave the country its name had almost died out by the 18th century. 2. The Basilica of Our Lady of Peace in The Ivory Coast capital of Yamoussoukro is one of the largest church buildings in the world covering 30000 square metres and accommodating 18,000 people. This is in spite of the fact that about a 40% of the country is Christian. 3. Ivory Coast has two official capitals. Yamoussoukro is the administrative and political capital, and it is also the fourth largest city in the country. However, Abidjan serves as the economic capital and is listed as official capital of the country in most guidebooks. The city has the third largest population of French speaking individuals anywhere in the world. 4. The Fêtes des Masques, (Festival of Masks) held in November in the region of Man is one of Cote d’Ivoire’s biggest and best-known festivals. Competitions between villages are held in order to find the best dancers, and to pay homage to the forest spirits embodied in the intricate masks. 5. Unlike traditional accounts of African countries, the Ivory Coast economy is the most advanced in sub-Saharan Africa, and one of the most developed economies in Africa as a whole. 6. Although there are other properties on the tentative list, Taï National Park, Mount Nimba Strict Nature Reserve, Comoé National Park, and the Historic Town of Grand-Bassam are the four properties that are on the World Heritage List in 2013. The three parks alone are home to thousands of different species of both flora and fauna, many of which are endangered or at risk. 7. Five important states flourished in Ivory Coast during the pre-European era. Compared to neighboring Ghana, Ivory Coast suffered little from the slave trade, as European slaving and merchant ships preferred other areas along the coast with better harbors. By the end of the 1880s, France had established what came through for control over the coastal regions of Ivory Coast, and in 1889 Britain recognized French sovereignty in the area. It gained independence in 1960. Ivory Coast game : https://www.purposegames.com/game/ivory-coast-flag-game?l=9576 Abidjan is sometimes referred to as the "Paris of West-Africa". It really is a beautiful place with loads of interesting animals for just CFA 200, well worth this small sum. Also don't forget a trip to Bassam, Abidjan's no. 1 beach. By Portus Chege, Abidjan Tiahmo Rauf, is among the few international businessmen on a business plan to revolutionize Abidjan. He represents a growing complement of European, American, African businessmen and bankers moving from the traditional mining industry to development. Tiahmo first came to Abidjan, perhaps among those who had joined a flight of opportunities to West Africa’s most fragile capital that had fallen from a thriving economy, and a business powerhouse, that was once under the French influence. A decade of political and economic instability through a backlash to Ivory Coast’s economy saw a shrinking market, both local and foreign enterprises collapsed and expatriates left. “We need the support of the African-American community, and we at Equation will offer a structure of communication and public relation specialized in connecting people all over the world. With a US$10 billion, through his investment venture, Tiahmo is projecting to offer real estate solution and ultra modern shopping complex that will transform Abidjan’s commercial hub to world class status. Through his company Equation, he has acquired land on which the company is set to develop an economic town which will offer real-time financial and business solutions.

Women in the Ivory Coast are hard working entrepeneurs, but have few opportunities to reach a bigger market. Antoinette Botti shares her story on how she tries to make better opportunities for these local businesses. Founder of Ging natural ginger drink, Antoinette Botti, was inspired to set up The Zomadre Women’s Project in her homeland of the Ivory Coast, where up to 90% of produce is grown by women. Using her African heritage and the springboard of her ever-growing business, Ms Botti aims to empower women in rural Africa through training, investment and nurturing local skills and talent to provide a decent livelihood and access to education for all. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx
